My uncle, a gifted vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, played the trombone in bands like the Saboteurs and Cannabis, right out of Nicetown, North Philadelphia. Growing up around him, I was immersed in the vibrant musical scene of Philadelphia, where talent flourished and creativity thrived. The rich sounds of his bands echoed through our home, filling it with an energy that ignited my passion for music. I had the privilege of being around some of the best musicians in the city, each with their own unique style and flair, creating a musical environment that was both inspiring and influential. Watching them collaborate and improvise taught me the true essence of musicianship and the power of community within the arts.

In this seventh installment, entitled “Let’s Talk Influences,” I’m excited to share a more personal side of my musical journey. Under the moniker ThinkTimm, I’ve always been a basement creator, surrounded by the rich tapestry of sound woven by my family and community. Growing up in the 80s, I found myself immersed in music, inspired by family members who performed in local bands. Picture this: I’m sitting in my dark studio, surrounded by an array of instruments and gadgets that sometimes feel more like toys than tools. The walls and shelves are a decorated with dioramas and collectibles from modern day mythologies that are now called franchises. My brain is a swirling vortex of creativity and analysis, where thoughts collide and sometimes explode into something beautiful—or utterly chaotic.

Now, let’s talk about the landscape of independent music. Did you know that over 120,000 tracks are released daily? Yeah, that’s right! It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack while the haystack is on fire! As an independent artist, I often grapple with the daunting realization that I’m just one tiny fish in a colossal ocean. With limited funds and only so many hours in a day, I find myself wearing all the hats—songwriter, producer, promoter, social media manager, and even the one who cleans up the “do it yourself “ ice caramel macchiato coffee or chocolate protein drink that spills on the desk just barely getting on the midi keyboard controller.

But here’s where it gets interesting. Being an hyper aware of my thoughts means I’m constantly analyzing everything—even my own creative process. I can get lost in my thoughts, pondering the “what ifs” and “why nots.” It’s a double-edged sword; while my analytical side sparks innovative ideas, it can also lead to paralysis by analysis. You know that feeling when you’re staring at a screen with a kick drum and snare playing on a loop, and your brain is like a hamster on a wheel? Yep, that’s me sometimes!

Now, let’s play devil’s advocate for a moment. Instead of focusing solely on the challenges, what if we explored the other streams of promotion available to us? Social media, for instance, has become a powerful tool for independent artists. I’ve learned that engaging with an audience, wondering if should try collaborating with fellow musicians, and even hopping on trends can open doors I never knew existed. The community aspect of music is vibrant, and it’s all about connecting with others who share the same passion.

And speaking of connection, let’s not forget the beauty of collaboration! As an independent artist/ music maker, I can hrive in spaces where ideas can bounce off one another like a game of creative ping-pong. Joining forces with other artists could lead to some new projects, but the reality is that I like wearing all of the hats. I do believe that we all told as little humans about sharing hats. That’s just me being crazy… yeah crazy.
